You probably know this simple truth – you may have great ideas, but until you write them down, they are not your action plan, they are your wishlist. It really helps to have the most important throughts and principles to be written down, or printed, so you can have a look at them whenever you need some inspiration.

With this in mind, below are 14 golden rules of success, following which you will put yourself on the path of achieving your dreams.

1. The Pareto principle. We spend our lives in a constant chase and a battle for time, to be able to squeeze more tasks in a day. Many people believe that the more they do the more they are going to achieve. According to the discovery of an Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, however, 80% of your success comes from only 20% of your activities. In other words, not all things you are doing are in fact necessary for your moving forward.

2. First give, then receive. Never expect it to work the other way round. With time your returns will exceed your investments.

3. Embrace errors and failures – they offer invaluable experience. You need to learn many things on your path to success. Only he who gets up every time and keeps moving forward wins.

4. Start every meeting like if you were welcoming your best friends. This attitude will help you to create and maintain good contacts, while nervousness will only bring you down.

5. Think ahead, plan ahead, keep abreast with the times – this will give you a feeling of control over your life.

6. Remember that most of your fears are merely your imagination, childish ‘monsters under the bed’, which in reality do not exist. Even if something unpredictable happens, you will often discover that it is not half way as bad as you imagined it would be. The more you focus on the possible negative outcome, the more you programme your life to deliver it to you. Concentrate on what you want to achieve instead of what you would like to avoid – make your wishes clear and expect the best.

7. Parkinson’s law: ”Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion”. You can actually do many tasks much faster than you think. The more time you schedule for a job, the longer it is going to take to be finished.

8. Team work is an excellent way to tackle tedious tasks.

9. Do not be too harsh on yourself – it is not productive and only brings unnecessary pain while wasting your time.

10. Do not compare yourself to others. You do not know their path. The only person you should strive to be better than, is the person you were yesterday. Looking back at the road you have travelled and focusing on your achievements will help to develop your self-esteem and prevent from mood swings you would be exposed to when comparing yourself to others.

11. Do not take yourself or events around too seriously – something that you are worrying about right now may be well forgotten in three years time. If you want to fly, leave behind things that weight you down. Taking yourself too seriously is a weakness that will only make you struggle more – let it go and relax into the joyful process of life!

12. Train your mind to stay focused on your goals. Write down your main goals and wishes and put them above your desk or any other place where you can easily see them during the day. It will help bringing your mind back on track when it gets distracted thus saving your time and energy and increasing your efficiency.

Focus on your goals

13. Often we hide our negative attitude behind the mask of ‘being realistic’ and only nod when our negative anticipations prove to be right. Remember that expecting negative things to happen is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you are prone to negative attitude, you need to start working on it ASAP and start focusing on good things – the sooner you do it the sooner miracles will start to happen!

14. Feel grateful even for little things. This sounds simple, but you would be surprised to know how many wonderful things in our lives we actually take for granted and hardly ever notice. The true and deep feeling of gratitude can miraculously transform your mood and your life. Try it for yourself.
